Why PTSO?
So many parents think that once their child moves on to middle school that their help is no longer needed or wanted, and they can finally take a break from the rigors of volunteering. From experience, we can tell you that this is NOT true! Kids in middle school need us now more than ever, and Woodlands absolutely needs your time and talent.
More than likely, everyone remembers from personal experience what an awkward age those middle school years were, not to mention the difficulties of peer pressure and the yearning for independence. It’s possible you have even witnessed your own child begin to deal with the same challenges. The pre-teen years are when so many children start to test their independence and pull away from mom and dad because they’re “embarrassing”. And when the hormones start raging, it can leave you feeling like your child is a veritable stranger. PTSO is one way you can help yourself and your child through this often tumultuous time.
With the PTSO you will have the opportunity to stay connected and involved. You can get to know the school, the teachers and staff and see firsthand what is going on with your child and their peers while in school and at school-based activities. Middle school is one of the most important times to show your child that you are involved and want to be a part of their life – even if your child says that they don’t want you to volunteer at school because they would be embarrassed to have you around. Parental involvement is a necessary fact, whether it is “embarrassing” or not. Our school needs every parent’s time and talent in order to successfully create the best learning environment for our kids. Besides, once the students see that their parents can volunteer without actually embarrassing them, their initial resistance should fade. Children learn the importance of volunteering through example, and PTSO gives you the opportunity to be a positive influence and a role model by showing our kids that education and volunteerism is important through our actions.
Even if you can’t be involved at school during the day, there are other ways you can help. A family membership to the PTSO is $7.00. It’s not a lot of money, but 100% goes directly back to the school to help us fund activities throughout the year. We also have a PTSO jeans day once each quarter where kids whose parents have joined PTSO are allowed to wear jeans to school. Your kids would probably say that was worth the cost of membership right there. Membership forms will be available at schedule pick-up on August 12th. Please stop by the membership table and sign up that day.
Our most popular (and extremely successful!) student event last year was the PTSO sponsored fall dance. Dances are a great time for parents who work during the day to help out, since they are held in the evenings. We even set up the volunteer posts outside the cafeteria, so the kids feel like they can “get their groove on” without mom or dad watching over their shoulder.
Holiday sweets and treats for teachers is another way you can help out, even if you can’t be at school. We show the teachers and staff our appreciation by asking all members and volunteers to bring in food for them to enjoy. And what better way to a teacher’s heart than through their stomach? We also host a continental breakfast during Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week, giving our members and volunteers another chance to show off their culinary (or shopping!) skills.
We know that most of you dread the word fundraiser. We do too, since we already have bought enough wrapping paper from past fundraisers to wrap our great-grandchildren’s gifts. That’s why we have made a commitment to focus on fundraisers that you can see the value in. We promise – no wrapping paper, but maybe we’ll revisit some past fundraising activities, like Secret Valentine and introduce new ventures with value in mind.
Family fun nights at places like Chili’s or Rita’s are a great way for us to raise money, because they are places we would all normally go anyway, and we get real value for our money. The restaurant gives a percentage of every sale directly back to the school. You just pay what you normally would for a nice meal, and the school gets money. How easy is that? We are hoping to have a set schedule next year so that you’ll know well in advance when the family fun nights will be held.
Uniform compliance is one of the major concerns for everyone. No one wants to hear the “D” word – DETENTION! PTSO is your best bet for quality uniform- approved polo shirts and hoodies. We will be offering beautifully embroidered items in multiple sizes at schedule pickup on August 12 and at many other school events. Look for our hoodie sale table at parent drop off once the weather starts to cool off and temperatures drop. We’re hoping to expand our inventory to include additional products with the WMS logo – keep an eye out! Order forms will always be available in the office for your convenience.
If you would like more information, please feel free to contact us at woodlandsptso@gmail.com or 561/880-5207. We even have a Facebook page – Woodlands Middle PTSO. Make us your friend and we’ll keep you informed!
Please make sure you register to be a volunteer in the school’s main office at schedule pickup August 12th. All volunteers must be cleared through the school district before they are allowed to work in the school. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Jones, our volunteer coordinator, at woodlandsvolunteers@gmail.com or 561/880-5207.
PTSO meetings are normally held on the second Monday of each month, however our first meeting will be held August 23rd at 6:00 in the media center. Immediately following is the School Advisory Council meeting. We are also going to have a volunteer orientation session for the 2010-11 school year in the next few weeks. Please e-mail woodlandsvolunteers@gmail.com to receive an invitation. Hope to see you there!
